Concept: Payer Bill-Protector App

Payers should boost NPS by proactively protecting members from unscrupulous provider billing

Health Insurance is typically the whipping horse of the healthcare ecosystem. But they don’t have to be. There’s an opportunity for payers to position themselves as the financial protector of the member, saving them from provider billing errors and balance billing attempts.

Payers do very little here currently. They send an EOB that members are supposed to manually reconcile against the provider bill. If a member recognizes a billing error, they must play the intermediary between the provider and the payer.

So for a late 2024 google cloud demo day, I built a concept “bill protector” app. Members can take a picture of their provider bill; the app will then automatically compare the bill against the members’ EOBs and plan design / utilization to detect whether the provider bill is accurate. It gives members confidence to pay their provider bill and automatically generates a letter for payers to send to the provider to fix the billing issues.
